Learn to Dive in the Dominican Republic with Superior Dive Sosua –
The reason that you’re probably reading this article is because you want to learn to dive in the Dominican Republic. You may have already sent us an email, like a lot of people do, asking to get your PADI.
What we are going to do here is explain the similarities & differences between the PADI & SDI Open Water Diver Courses. The idea is to help you make an informed decision when it comes to choosing which agency you learn to dive through. We want you to sign up for the course that you feel will be the most beneficial & the one that is more suited to your educational needs.
The Similarities –
Both agencies are governed by the RSTC (Recreational Scuba Training Council) meaning that if you satisfactory complete the requirements for either a PADI or an SDI Open Water Course the end result is the same, you’ll be certified to dive up to 18m / 60ft anywhere in the world in conditions similar to which you were trained in.
There’s little to no difference in the underwater skills that you need to accomplish during either of the training courses. Both agencies & both licenses are recognized worldwide.
No matter which course you decided to do it will be divided into three parts consisting of e-learning, confined water training sessions & four open water check out dives. The in water training can be accomplished in as little as 3 to 4 days.
The Differences –
PADI is the market leader when it comes to recreational scuba diving training agencies, the Coca-Cola of diving & the most recognized world over. Their slogan is ‘the way the world learns to dive’ & they offer a extremely well structured open water course. All underwater skills have to be accomplished in a set order meaning that you can’t go from skill A to skill B before mastering that primary skill. This method of teaching means that wherever you go in the world the course skill structure & sequencing is the same which helps create a globalized standard which every PADI Instructor can follow step by step.
Total Cost – 535usd (195usd paid directly to PADI for the e-learning & 350usd to us for the in water training).
SDI is the recreational arm of the globally renowned technical diving agency TDI. They are viewed as one of the most professional & progressive dive agencies in the world. SDI’s philosophy is to improve recreational diver training by enhancing older diving practices, incorporating newer technology & emphasizing safety. One stand out feature of their course is that you learn how to dive using a dive computer which helps keep you safe & lengthens your dive times from the get go. The course itself is not designed as one size fits all meaning that your instructor can use their experience to sequence your skills in a flexible way that is tailored to your learning needs.
Total Coast – 465usd (sign up directly with us & we will send you a unique e-learning code).
No matter which organisation you decide to get certified through you will be licensed to dive up to 18m / 60ft anywhere in the world.
The big difference is how the two agencies allow their instructors to schedule the sequence of the skills involved in your training.
It is an SDI standard for all divers to use a personal dive computer on every dive which not only helps keep you safe but is also very relevant in this day & age.
The pricing between the two courses differs but shouldn’t be the deciding factor when choosing to go either the SDI or PADI route.
Most scuba diving agencies are governed by the same body meaning that as you progress there is nothing stopping you from changing from one training agency to another. For example you can do your SDI Open Water Course then go on to do the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course at a later date without any problems or visa versa.
We recommend talking directly to the instructor that you’re planning on doing your training with & ask them which course they think is better suited to you & your needs. The rapport that you build with your instructor coupled with their knowledge & professionalism is often more important than the name of the certifying organisation on your license.
