Cabarete on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic is a water sports heaven with perfect ocean conditions for kite boarding, surfing, stand up paddle boarding & wind surfing. This very cool little beach town was born to cater for water sports enthusiasts & even holds it’s own annual Master of the Ocean event with contestants competing in all four of these disciplines with the aim to be crowned overall champion (masteroftheocean.com). With that being said unfortunately Cabarete’s waters are not ideal for us folk that like to spend our time under the water rather than on top of it. BUT SCUBA DIVER’S DON’T PANIC, for all of us Scuba Diving addicts we have another little beach town called Sosua that’s just 15 minutes away from Cabarete.
Viewed in the eyes of many as Cabarete’s naughty little sister the town of Sosua is home to great diving & a number of dive shops. The ocean conditions experienced in these these two little towns are at completely different ends of the spectrum. Cabarete & it’s beaches are exposed to those sometimes forceful trade winds where as Sosua is tucked back into a little notch in the Dominican Republic’s coastline which helps create a tranquil bay perfect for scuba diving, swimming & snorkeling. Sosua Bay is home to an abundance of marine life & the best thing of all it’s dive sites are only a matter of seconds or minutes boat ride away from Sosua Beach. With little to no currents or tide changes the crystal clear, warm waters of Sosua Bay are a great place to dive or to learn to scuba dive.
I have lived in this little slice of paradise on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic for the past 9 years & absolutely love it, it’s my home & I wouldn’t swap it for anywhere else in the world. As owner & operator at Superior Dive Sosua this little beach town is where I work, where I dive & where I teach others how to Scuba Dive. From day one Superior Dive Sosua has set about offering a personalized dive experience that fits around it’s clients vacation & diving needs. We don’t cater to the masses & only dive in small groups. Your safety & enjoyment is our priority. There is no 45 minute limit to our dives & we take you to the best dive sites that Sosua has to offer not just the closest or more convenient. All of our PADI Scuba Diving Courses are taught privately for your small group or one on one. We feel that teaching this way helps create better, safer & well rounded divers. All of our prices are inclusive – the price we give you is the price you pay, we include all equipment rentals & even photos / videos of your dives at no extra charge.
So, if you’re staying in Cabarete, then give us a call we’ll come & pick you up or arrange to get you transported to our dive center (WhatsApp +18492849494). If you’re looking to kite in the afternoon then come & dive with us in the morning & we’ll get you back to Kite Beach for when that good wind that starts. You have options & we will customize a dive schedule that is suited to you & your vacation needs. You can also email me at [email protected] for more information about diving with us. Please check out our reviews on TripAdvisor & Google, people say nice things about us for a good reason & you can follow us on Facebook & Instagram (@superiordive).
My name is Luke Charles-Short a PADI IDC Staff Instructor (IDCS #289058) & owner of Superior Dive Sosua. I thank you for taking your time to read this. I hope this article gave you a little insight into the water sports on offer here on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic especially in Cabarete & Sosua & as to how we operate as a dive center. If you’re interested in learning a little more about my diving background then please carry on reading.
I made my very first ever dive or shall we call it a search & recovery mission in Australia back in the year 2000. It was in a shark netted bay in a little town called Gymea close to Sydney under the watchful supervision of my then partner in crime & the person I call brother, Adam Foster, this guy opened my eyes to the underwater world & diving. After completing my PADI Open Water Course in an old quarry / brick pit in Peterborough, England, I came to the Dominican Republic in January 2011 with the purpose of become a Scuba Instructor & starting a new life. I received an excellent grounding at Northern Coast Diving in Sosua where I worked my way up to PADI Divemaster & then Instructor level. Mentored by now PADI Regional Manager for the Maldives & PADI Course Director, Matt Wenger, I was lucky enough to receive the best possible standard of scuba diver training. After 5 or more years working with the green team I then took on the role as manager at Dive Cabarete. Now along with my soon to be wife, Rosanna, we own & operate Superior Dive Sosua an Authorized PADI Dive Resort (S-26566) which aims to provide the best diver training & the best diving that Sosua Bay has to offer. We are a family run dive shop so expect to find my daughter Abigail-Rose with us in the afternoons after she finishes nursery school & my Mum, Maddie, helping out when Rosanna is at university.
