As divers we have a duty to protect our oceans & educate people around us on the importance of ocean conservation. As part of AWARE Week by Project AWARE & PADI on Saturday 22nd September 2018 Superior Dive Sosua & a small number of the other local dive centers took it upon themselves to perform an ocean & beach clean up here in Sosua Bay / Dominican Republic. The result was a resounding success & we pulled a great amount of garbage from the ocean ranging from fishing line, plastic bottles, plastic cutlery, styrofoam & clothes. 
As a developing nation the Dominican Republic, like a lot of other developing countries, has it’s flaws when it comes to responsible garbage disposal & collection, the mass usage of single use plastics & Styrofoam, recycling and education. Projects like beach & ocean clean ups will only help raise awareness of the need to protect our oceans. Superior Dive Sosua is looking to designate a monthly ocean clean up day where our divers can come together & pull as much trash from the ocean as possible. We want to become part of the solution. If the local dive centers can come together & help keep our little slice of paradise trash free then it will only benefit the local community. We want positive feedback from the tourists that visit Sosua Bay after all we want them to return & to tell all their friends how beautiful it is here on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic.
Of course in a perfect world the amount of garbage that ends up in the ocean would be zero but in reality that is not the case. That’s why we urge our divers to make responsible lifestyle choices. Take a bag to collect you grocery shopping rather than using multiple plastic bags from the supermarket. It is absolutely the norm to have your batida (fresh fruit milkshake) served in a throw away Styrofoam cup or your lunch served in a Styrofoam container here in the Dominican Republic. We now take our reusable cups & boxes with us when ordering our milkshake or lunch. Sometimes making small 
changes to your own daily routine can make a big difference in protecting the world’s oceans in the long run. I picked up my traditional British Sunday Lunch from Taberna El Conde here in Sosua in my own reusable container today. Make responsible choices guys. Change starts with ourselves.
